What Is Ammonium Paratungstate?

Ammonium Paratungstate is the crystalline ammonium salt of paratungstic acid and the central intermediate produced when tungsten ores are refined. It is described as the most important raw material for all other tungsten products. On controlled heating, APT decomposes to tungsten oxides, which are then hydrogen reduced to metallic tungsten powder. Because the purity of the final tungsten powder is governed largely by the purity of the starting APT, trace metal control at this stage is critical for demanding applications such as cutting tools, sputtering targets and aerospace alloys.

Properties of APT

APT is a white crystalline powder that is only slightly soluble in cold water and insoluble in alcohol. It is stable under normal room temperature storage and decomposes on heating (around 600 °C) to yield tungsten trioxide. Its controlled crystal morphology gives good flowability for precise dosing, while its predictable decomposition behaviour supports uniform conversion into tungsten oxides and, ultimately, tungsten metal and carbide.

Uses & Applications

APT is the starting point for most of the tungsten supply chain. The main application areas we supply APT powder for are outlined below.

1 Tungsten Metal Powder

Thermally decomposed to WO3 or blue tungsten oxide, then hydrogen reduced to elemental tungsten powder for powder metallurgy.

2 Tungsten Carbide (WC)

Precursor for cemented carbide used in cutting tools, mining bits, dies and wear resistant machining components.

3 Tungsten Oxides

Converted to WO3 and blue tungsten oxide (TBO) for pigments, electrochromic films and further processing. See our Tungsten Oxide product.

4 Catalysts

Used as a tungsten source in petrochemical and specialty catalyst formulations.

5 Electronics & Advanced Materials

Feedstock for thin film coatings, specialty electrodes and semiconductor related tungsten materials.

6 Aerospace & Alloys

Basis for high density tungsten alloys used in aerospace, defence and radiation shielding components.

Bulk & Industrial Supply

Neugen Labs supplies high purity APT for manufacturing and industrial requirements. Buyers can request bulk quantities, wholesale supply, custom packaging and product specifications based on application needs. Whether you need a small lab scale quantity or metric ton industrial volumes, we can support both one time purchases and scheduled supply contracts. APT price can vary based on purity, order quantity, packaging and required specifications. Contact Neugen Labs for current pricing and availability.

APT vs AMT: What’s the Difference?

Ammonium Paratungstate (APT) and Ammonium Metatungstate (AMT) are related tungsten salts but are not interchangeable. The table below summarises the key differences to help you select the right material.

Attribute APT AMT
CAS Number 11120-25-5 12028-48-7
Water Solubility Low (slightly soluble) High (very soluble)
Typical Use Solid state tungsten powder & carbide production Catalysts and solution based tungsten chemistry
Relationship Primary refined tungsten intermediate Produced by partial thermal decomposition of APT

How to Choose an APT Supplier

When qualifying an Ammonium Paratungstate source, compare suppliers on the factors that affect your yield and final tungsten quality:

Purity & assay: confirm the WO3/tungsten content and overall assay against your spec.
Trace metals: check Fe, Mo, Si, Ca and other limits that carry through to tungsten powder.
Batch consistency: request COA history to confirm lot to lot stability.
Documentation: COA and SDS should be readily available.
Packaging & MOQ: match packaging and minimum order to your process scale.
Logistics & lead time: confirm US delivery coverage and supply reliability.

Supply and Availability

As a USA based APT manufacturer and supplier, Neugen Labs supports both urgent and large scale requirements for procurement managers, powder producers and carbide manufacturers. For accurate pricing and lead times, we recommend requesting a quote based on your specification and volume.
